hate the player or hate the game is the question
I play skirmish 99% of the time and also I play solo 95% of the time as my job is very sociable and I play games for me time. that being said over half the time I play I will top our team on the leader board and if I play a full game and am not in the top 3 its very rare indeed, the only exception is if I am trying something random like my current fetish for nova knives.
if we look at skirmish - I would say 70% + play solo like myself and normally there is one squad in the game so its on one side which creates unbalance. if we look at suit composition its something like 10% starter 20% militia 35% basic 25% advanced and 10% proto. really 65% of the people in game have such a low chance vs the 10% who use proto in combat that its very demoralising for them being cannon fodder. As much as I hate to see a coward if your basic suit costs 15k and you die 15 times and get low WP's your making a significant loss. most squads I face - (I seem to be a counter balance and rarely have a squad on my side) are a squad of vets or single corp - this confidence in ability means that they will almost always be running the top level of gear in the game stacking its use on one side.
95% of people on the forums talk of counters, on these forums I am at the lower end of middle of the road SP wise with 26mil SP's quite a few have over double me. At my SP level I now have the versatility to counter most things to some extent or another yet when I am in game I believe that I am in the top 10%-15% SP wise. most people in game cannot dream of the options I have for a long time yet, and if they perused a jack of all trades master of none approach they would not be very affective at anything.
take myself as an example of options
26mil SP's
weapons
proto level HMG swarms combat rifle scrambler rifle
advanced nova knives scrambler pistol grenades remotes forge gun
suits
proto mini scout
advanced minmitar medium frame minmitar heavy frame
basic minmitar logistics minmitar commando minimitar sentinel minmitar assault dren suits
equipment
advanced uplinks nanohives rep tool needles
basic active scanner
my best counters are based on where my SP's are so I can be good at AV, anti scout, slaying, hacking, setting up uplinks, yet when the needs arise I can be a logi bro and help the team out. a heavy to clear stiff defence and all at a similar level to what I believe the majority of the player are at as their main specialisation. How can you tell these players to get good or counter things when they do not a viable counter yet? for most solo proto setups I have a counter in an advanced fit or bellow ( I do not use proto besides swarms) but realistically some fits are not really viable due to the amount of sacrifice I need to make. sure if I had this suit or that suit it would be no problem but I don't
now when we talk about counters to a proto squad ......I can't magically make 5 people with good SP's join me when I am already deployed. but I can still carry a team to victory by avoiding them, but that does leave some other person to be the fodder.
Personally I hate the game and not the player. people will use what is available to them in order to win. CCP needs to create the balance not the players. I personally regulate what I use to have a good game with the majority of the player so advanced and bellow suit/weapon wise although I have plenty of isk. players who run 100% proto are within the rules, and of course its a lot less challenging playing wise to be good, yet its a lot more challenging to run isk positive. unfortunately PC has broken the meaning of isk for some so going isk negative does not matter.
should CCP make basic and bellow - no squads high sec medium sec advanced and bellow 4 man squads low sec unlimited gear levels and full selected teams like PC
imo yes as you solve all the major problems and provide people with a good progression route to follow, if players are not great they can simply choose to remain at a level where they feel comfortable.

This is why I like the idea of meta-level gear capped matches, where only a certain level of gear can be used. I'd rather lose 100 competitive, hard fought games over winning a hundred protostomps any. day. of. the. week. And if you wanted to bring in standard gear into to a proto-gear match, then you could do so -- then all the protostomping defenders on these forums that continually state, "gear doesn't matter, me and my squad win with militia all the time" can stop paying lip service to this idea every time it comes up and prove it (and btw, I totally recognize that there are mercs here than can consistently do it, but I think there are are a hell of a lot fewer of you than the forums would suggest).

I agree 100% with this part of your post! good games are what its all about but unfortunately they do not happen anywhere near enough due to gear imbalance. think of all those new players dust has lost due to it, its a sobering thought considering the current state of the game.
as for the proto try hards yes some are good, but IMO most are simply just above average players. If your actually good and run proto in pubs you do have to ask what would keep you playing? if there is no challenge then why do it? ok you make isk but isk as you say has no relevance unless you don't have it. |
